She then worked as an assistant U.S. attorney in the Civil Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, and as deputy chief of the Appellate Section of the Civil Division. In 2006, she was appointed by President George W. Bush to be a commissioner on the United States Commission on Civil Rights. In 2009, she was appointed by President Barack Obama to be general counsel of the U.S. Department of Transportation. In that position, she was the first African American woman to serve in a cabinet-level position in the Obama Administration.

In December of 2013, Judge Jackson was confirmed by the United States Senate to be a judge on the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. She is the first African American woman to serve on that court.
