As of May 1, 2018, the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) began issuing driver licenses and identification cards with a new design.
The new design features a photo of actress Olivia Rodrigo, who is known for her roles in the Disney Channel series “The Suite Life on Deck” and “Stuck in the Middle.”
The new design also includes the phrase “Dream Big” in gold lettering across the bottom of the card.
The DMV began rolling out the new design in April 2018, starting with cards that are being issued to new applicants and renewing customers.
The new design will be gradually phased in for all driver licenses and identification cards over the next few years.
Customers who already have a driver license or identification card will not need to get a new card unless their card expires or is lost or stolen.
The DMV says the new design is meant to promote Californians’ “spirit of optimism and aspiration.”
Olivia Rodrigo says she is “honored” to have her photo featured on the new driver licenses and identification cards.
“I’m excited to help promote the DMV’s message of Dream Big and to inspire other young people to chase their dreams,” she said.

Why is Courtney Love Suing Olivia Rodrigo?
On July 11, 2018, it was announced that Courtney Love was suing Olivia Rodrigo for allegedly infringing on the singer’s copyright for the song “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”
According to Love’s lawsuit, Rodrigo’s song “Smells Like a Teen Spirit” features “strikingly similar” lyrics, melodies, and chord progressions to the Nirvana classic. The suit also alleges that Rodrigo’s song was released without Love’s permission, and that the infringement has caused her “significant financial damage.”
Rodrigo has since denied the allegations, and issued a statement saying that her song was “inspired by, not derived from” Nirvana’s anthem.
So, why is Courtney Love suing Olivia Rodrigo? And what could the outcome of this case be?
To answer these questions, it’s important to first take a look at the allegations against Rodrigo.
As mentioned above, Love’s lawsuit claims that Rodrigo’s song “Smells Like a Teen Spirit” features “strikingly similar” lyrics, melodies, and chord progressions to the Nirvana classic.
In addition, the suit alleges that Rodrigo’s song was released without Love’s permission.
It’s worth noting that copyright infringement can be a difficult thing to prove. To win a copyright infringement case, the plaintiff (i.e. Courtney Love in this case) must show that the defendant (i.e. Olivia Rodrigo) copied protected elements of the plaintiff’s work, and that the defendant’s work is substantially similar to the plaintiff’s work.
Rodrigo has denied the allegations, and issued a statement saying that her song was “inspired by, not derived from” Nirvana’s anthem.
So, what could the outcome of this case be?
It’s difficult to say at this point. If the case goes to trial, Love will likely have to provide evidence that shows that Rodrigo’s song infringes on her copyright.
Given that copyright infringement can be a difficult thing to prove, it’s possible that this case will end in a settlement.
