Photojournalist killed in Ukraine

A photojournalist working for the Associated Press was killed Wednesday in eastern Ukraine.

Stephane Hazoumé, a French national, was shot and killed while on assignment in the town of Krasnoarmiisk.

Hazoumé had been working in the region for the past two weeks, documenting the fighting between government forces and pro-Russian separatists.

Hazoumé is the third AP journalist to be killed in Ukraine since the conflict began in April.

A statement from the AP said Hazoumé “was a highly skilled and courageous photographer who had dedicated himself to documenting the conflict in eastern Ukraine.”

“He was an extraordinary journalist, a deeply passionate individual and a wonderful friend,” the statement said.

The French foreign ministry also released a statement mourning Hazoumé’s death.

“Stephane Hazoumé was a journalist of great talent who had covered many conflicts in the world. His death is a great loss for his colleagues and for French journalism,” the statement said.

The CPJ has also reported that at least two media workers have been kidnapped in Iraq this year.

In March, Iraqi journalist Afrah Shawqi was abducted from her home in the city of Mosul.

And in February, Turkish journalist Cuneyt Unal was seized by militants from the Islamic State group while on assignment in the city of Aleppo, in Syria.

Unal was later released.

The CPJ says that the number of journalists killed while covering the Iraq war is now at least 83.

That’s more than the number of journalists killed in the conflict in Afghanistan (at least 66), and almost as many as the number killed in the conflict in Syria (at least 91).
