The photo, titled “Face to Face,” was taken by 18-year-old British photographer Faisal Aziz. It shows an orangutan mother and her baby crossing a river in Borneo, a region that’s home to some of the last remaining orangutans on Earth.
“To be able to see wild orangutans in their natural habitat, and to be so close to them, was just an incredible experience,” Aziz said in a statement. “I’m really happy that my photograph was able to capture that moment and show their beauty and strength.”
Second place in the contest went to a photo of an elephant family crossing a river in Botswana, taken by 18-year-old Australian photographer Jaco Marais.
“I love the fact that these elephants are crossing a river – it makes for a much more interesting photograph,” Marais said. “I was really happy with the way the light was hitting them and the way the water was flowing around them.”
Third place was awarded to a photo of a humpback whale calf and its mother swimming near Alaska, taken by 18-year-old American photographer Mathew Smith.
“I was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time to capture this moment,” Smith said. “I’ve always been fascinated by whales, and I’m so glad I was able to get a photograph of this calf and its mother.”

How much money do National Geographic photographers make?
National Geographic photographers make a good living, but they don’t earn as much as one might think. The average salary for a National Geographic staff photographer is $62,500. However, many photographers make less than that, and a few make more.
National Geographic photographers are paid a salary, but they also earn royalties on the photos they sell. Royalties are usually about 12 percent of the sale price, but they can be as high as 20 percent. So, a photographer who sells a photo for $1,000 would earn $200 in royalties.
Some National Geographic photographers also earn income from speaking engagements. For example, a photographer who is asked to speak at a conference might be paid $1,000 to $2,000 for speaking.
So, how much money do National Geographic photographers make? The answer is, it depends. Some photographers make a good living, while others earn a more modest income. But, on average, National Geographic photographers make $62,500 a year.”””
